Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

F etal alcohol spectrum disorder is mostly seen in those children whose mother consume alcohol during pregnancy. There are several types of abnormal symptoms of Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), like small eyes openings, smooth philtrum, thin upper lip, and small head size. Apart from this some other symptoms are also seen in children like, short height, low body weight, behaviorial problems, learning problems, and lots of difficulties with hearing or sight. Other than, taking alcohol and drugs also brings other symptoms.


Fetal alcohal syndrome also causes problems such as brain damage and growth problems. The term Fetal alcohol syndrome was used first in 1973. The most serious condition is called Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).

According to a survey of United States, 10% women who consumed alcohol before getting pregnant last month. 20% to 30% of women who consume alcohol in small amounts sometimes durning pregnancy and 3.6% of women who are totaly alcoholics, she consumed large amount of alcohol frequently.

The risk of FASDs depends entirely on the amount of your alcohol you have consumed during your pregnancy and the frequency with which you have consumed alcohol. Other than consumption of alcohol directly affects on the blood-brain barriers, which directly or inderectly affects the developing skills of the children body. That's why medical authorities always recommend to women no consumption of alcohol during the pregnancy or while you trying to pregnant.

Sign and Symptoms of FASD

We can see the FASD symptoms on those children whose mother used large amount of alcohol during their pregnancy. The risk of FASDs increases when mother is a heavy drinker, and according to studies and medical authorities use of alcohol is most harmful during the first three weeks of pregnancy. Due to the consumption of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy, the childrens have face about more than 400 problems, can accure with FASD. These disorder can be severe or mild and can be the reason of physically and mentally birth defects.
