One inch of Rain is Equal to 10 inches of Snow

The Rule of Thumb About 10 Inches of Snow Equaling 1 Inch of Water Is Fine If Someone Is Just Curious. However, There Are Lots Of Variables And The Amount Could Be More Or Less Than 1 Inch Of Water.

Here Is Another Way Of Looking At It:

  • 1 Square Foot Of Snow 1 Inch Deep Would Yield:
  • Fresh Snow 4 To 6 Ounces Of Water
  • Settled Snow 16 To 24 Ounces
  • Packed Snow 28 To 32 Ounces
  • Wet Snow 32 To 66 Ounces
The Totals Have Been Rounded Off To Eliminate Fractions Of An Ounce.

NOTE:

On average, ten inches of snow equals one inch of rain in the US, although this the ratio can vary from two inches for sleet to nearly fifty inches for very dry, powdery snow under certain conditions.
