What would the Ocean Looks like Without Water

Earth without water, it shows what the shape of the Earth's surface would look like if the surface were entirely covered in water. See? Exactly wrong. It's easy, given the caption, to think that this is what the Earth's solid surface under the oceans looks like.

If the ocean dies, we all die. But food being taken from the ocean is the least of the factors that will kill us. The ocean is the life support system for the planet, providing 50% of the oxygen, we breathe and regulating climate.

In a recent remake of a 2008 NASA video, planetary scientist James O'Donoghue shows what it would look like if all that water drained away, revealing the hidden three-fifths of Earth's surface.

Oceans cover most of the Earth, including its longest mountain range and the ancient bridges that humans crossed to reach other continents. While our planet as a whole may never run out of the water, it's important to remember that clean fresh water is not always available where and when humans need it. In fact, half of the world's freshwater can be found in only six countries. Also, every drop of water that we use continues through the water cycle.

Without life, there would be little to no oxygen in the atmosphere, and without the oceans' ability to absorb carbon dioxide our atmosphere would contain a lot more of that particular gas then it does today - it would probably be mostly CO2, in fact, as four billion years of volcanism would be constantly increasing the concentration of the stuff. Runaway greenhouse effect would mean the planet would be a hot and nasty place.
