World's Smallest Animal
The Etruscan shrew shares the title of the world's smallest mammal with a fascinating creature from Thailand: Kitti's hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai), also known as the smallest species of bat🦇. It gets its nickname from its size ”barely over an inch long” which makes it about the size of a large bumblebee!
Etruscan shrew
The Etruscan shrew (Suncus Etruscans), also known as the Etruscan pygmy shrew or the white-toothed pygmy shrew, is the smallest known extant mammal by mass, the Etruscan shrew has a body length of about 4 centimeters (1.6 in) excluding the tail. It is characterized by very rapid movements and fast metabolism, eating about 1.5–2 times its own body weight per day. The weighing only about 1.8 grams (0.063 oz) on average. The Etruscan shrew has a slender (not truncated) body, with a length between 3 and 5.2 cm (1.2 and 2.0 in) excluding the tail, which adds another 2.4 to 3.2 cm (0.94 to 1.26 in).
In Europe, the Etruscan shrew is mainly found in the Mediterranean lowlands and in Asia in a belt extending between 10° N and 30° N. Their habitat includes forest, shrub, and grassland environments, it feeds on various small vertebrates and invertebrates, mostly insects, and can hunt individuals of the same size as itself.
Kitti's hog-nosed bat
Kitti's hog-nosed bat is a near-threatened species of bat🦇 and the only extant member of the family Craseonycteridae. It occurs in western Thailand and southeast Myanmar, where it occupies limestone caves along rivers. Kitti's hog-nosed bat is the smallest species of bat and arguably the world's smallest mammal depending on how size is defined. It has a reddish-brown or grey coat, with a distinctive pig-like snout.
Kitti's hog-nosed bat is about 29 to 33 mm (1.1 to 1.3 in) in length and 2 g (0.071 oz) in mass. Hence the common name of "bumblebee bat. Kitti's hog-nosed bat roosts in caves in limestone hills, far from the entrance. While many caves contain only 10 to 15 individuals, the average group size is 100, with a maximum of about 500.
