The World's Smallest Bird

Bee Hummingbird, Zunzuncito, or Helena hummingbird is a species of hummingbirds which is the smallest bird in this world. It is native to Cuba. He belongs to the Trochilidae family and the binomial name is Mellisa Helena and the bee hummingbird is the smallest living bird.



Females weight 2.6g and are 6.1cm (2.4 inches) long and are slightly larger than males, with an average weight of 1.95g and length of 5.5cm (2.2 inches) like all hummingbirds, it's as a swift, strong flier.

In-flight, the Bee Hummingbird’s tiny wings beat 80 times a second. And during a courtship flight, they beat up to 200 times per second and can fly upside down and backward. Even their heart rates are fascinating. One of the fastest in the animal kingdom, bee hummingbirds heart rates can reach 1,260 beats per minute. it is the second-fastest heart rate ever recorded in any animal. This is believed to be the lowest weight limit for any warm-blooded animal.

Bee hummingbirds can live up to 7 years in the wild and up to 10 years in captivity.


MALE

The male has a green pileum and bright red throat, iridescent gorget with elongated lateral plumes, bluish upperparts, and the rest of the underparts mostly greyish white. During the mating season, males have a reddish to pink head, chin, and throat. Male bee hummingbirds are territorial and will aggressively chase other nectar-feeding animals, moths, and bees, from feeding.

FEMALE

The female is green above, whitish below, with white tips to the outer tail feathers. Female bee hummingbirds are bluish-green with a pale gray underside. The tips of their tail feathers have white spots. The female lays only two eggs at a time, each about the size of a coffee bean.
