Punctuation Marks

Punctuation is the use of spacing, conventional signs, and certain typographical devices as aids to the understanding and correct reading of a written text, whether read silently or aloud.

AMPERSAND:

Use to represent the word "and".

 

2.

APOSTROPHE:

Use to show possession, to construct contractions.

 


3.

COLON:

Use after a complete statement to introduce a series of items.


 

4.

COMMA:

Use mainly to indicate a brief pause.

 

5.

DASH:

Use to emphasize words or phrases and to summarize ideas.

 


6.

ELLIPSIS:

Use to indicate a pause or a trailing off of thought.

 


7.

EXCLAMATION MARK:

Use after an interjection or to indicate strong feelings.

 


8.

PERIOD (Full stop):

Use at the end of a complete declarative sentence.

 



9.

PARENTHESIS:

Use to set off additional information.

 

10.

QUESTION MARK:

Use to indicate a direct query.

 

11.

QUOTATION MARKS:

Use to set off speech, a quotation, a phrase, or a word.



12.

SEMICOLON:

Use to link two independent clauses that are closely related.
